I thought that we looked more like a patched up team exhausted after a long season than a fresh team at the start of a new season.

As I said, worrying.

They did work hard , just didn’t have much ball and didn’t help that they lost the ball cheaply at times. But for all their possession, City didn’t have many more chances than us. Bowen was a worry, didn’t get the chance to do anything, when you looked to him to do something.

It was all very worrying, not losing against Man City but the lack of fight. It sorely reminded me of what it's been like at the LS apart from two short seasons when we've actually looked like a team worthy of playing in front of sixty-two thousand paying punters.

After those two seasons the injury fairy has decided to bite us in the arse good and early.

Maybe we'll miss Mark Noble more than people think as he was so obviously the conduit between the players and the coaching staff and owners. We're back to looking like a bunch of half decent players who met ten minutes before the game in the car park.

It's a pity Coventry and Downes didn't get 10 minutes. They are going to be needed pretty soon, probably at left back or center back

Very worrying that we are down to one fit centre half....well two but you can't blame Diop as he clearly isn't in Moyes plans and he wants to get away.

Johnson is like a fish out of water at centre back. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but....would Rice or Baptiste been a better option?

Posituves for the game

1. Man City look even beetter this and it should prevent the odious Klopp and the scummy scousers from winning the league.

2. Things can only get easier after that.

I have watched the replays of their second goal, and if it wasn't against us I would say that it was magnificent.

Quite predictable from Moyes but there were a lot of poor performances from the players. We never looked in the game for whatever reason, hopefully we turn up against Forest.

Should read Chesters NOT Perkins

Yeah that's definitely true. 25 mill almost seems like the average price for a premier league footballer now. The really good ones are now going for 50-60 million and the exceptional ones for upwards of that.

Madness.

Yes Scorch - Haaland will make short work of a lot of defenders , but there is something wrong with Zouma - he just never seems comfortable running !
I’m not sure 25-30 million gets quality these days .

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Man City - Official Match Thread - Preview
Areola couldn’t do anything about that second goal. The challenge for the penalty was poor though.

Haaland is going to make a lot of defenders- down better than Zouma- look bad this season. Quality player.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Man City - Official Match Thread - Preview
Areola getting some stick on here for the second goal - absolutely crazy . Haaland had some much time to pick his spot , he could have finished a crossword first . Top class striker .
Lots of other players getting called out and deservedly so , but one not really mentioned is Zouma .
Very poor imo and desperately slow - to watch him labour after Haaland for the second goal was pitiful .
He has not been good for some time - probably related to the cat episode .
But that was last season- what is the reason now ?

Penny for Dec’s thoughts seeing the lesser talented Phillips trotting on for the last few minutes, in a squad of world class players.

I know it wasn’t a foul by Haarland on Fabianski, but refs need to whatch him when he jumps with his foot high.

Yes he was on our radar I think but perhaps as a back up or second choice to Zielinski your r Kostic? When it was clear they weren’t going to happen Cornet was signed , sealed and delivered in 3 or 4 days !

I guess the point is that Sullivan gets a deal done quickly only when it’s thru his agents? The model we always used until very recently when Moyes and Newman took charge of identification of targets.

Sullivan possibly has a limit on fees with Salthouse and Mackay based on them being “preferred” agents? Sullivan and Brady deals with players from other agents take forever and/or seem to break down more often than not? I just wonder if haggling on every penny that Sullivan does or changing terms, refusing to pay large agent or player fees or offering long repayment schedules or putting in initial bids that are 50% of asking price, which was his MO , when working thru his agents is now a big reason why we seem to lose out on many deals?

Sir Alf
Cornet was always on our radar. Don't know why he couldn't have beeb bought earlier.
He's currently not a top 6 player. Thus it was down to us or teams around us.to purchase him. The same for Dwight McNeill who had a terrible season. On the verge of the England team 18 months ago.
Both are quite similar levels, depends on who wants it more.
( or maybe with Moyes if he plays at all, probably need 6 months bedding in )

"Sullivan I tell you continues to hold us back as he always will. Probably only his crony agents are happy to deal with his brinkmanship and derisory bid model? He is likely to be reviled by most chairmen and agents."

Yes, yes and yes.

Piss poor performance.

As usual in our first game we look unprepared, unfit, out of sorts, leggy and jaded. Its no different to any other season. I've always said we seem to be on another timeline to all the other teams as our managers always seem to appear that the start of the season catches by surprise.

More players out than in, injuries, lack of apparent idea of how to win a game of football. we looked flatter than a witches tit.

Compare that to Fulham who looked aggressive and full of energcy against Scouse and almost took them to the fucking cleaners.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Man City - Official Match Thread - Preview
We need to get energy and more creative in that midfield and as mentioned saw that with Rodri and Gundawan. Rice is equivalent to Rodri ( although the latter has a tad more pace as shown when he outsprinted Bowen to a ball down the flank 2nd half ) but Gundawan made them tick in midfield as the link between defence and attack and spreading play wide, getting in the gap between our midfield and back 4 too. We also need legs and better technical ability in our right and left back and another striker.

Moyes I suspect is frustrated with the owners or should I say Sullivan and Brady not being able to get his targets. Perhaps they are unrealistic in some cases but other than Aguerd we have had to opt for back up options I think? How much of the long sagas fit every transfer is down to Sullivan in passive resistance mode? I mean Cornet came in very quickly once they knew Kostic was a non starter? Cornet is a Will Salthouse client I think? Funny that :-(. Sullivan I tell you continues to hold us back as he always will. Probably only his crony agents are happy to deal with his brinkmanship and derisory bid model? He is likely to be reviled by most chairmen and agents

Well beaten and outplayed, but I expect most of us expected that to be the case against one of the very best sides in the world, especially now they have a top striker who I expect will get close to 30 goals this season. This isn't a yardstick for how our season will go so I'm not reading much into it, especially with a slightly makeshift defence. They will absolutely batter some sides, and there are other sides that look in far more trouble than us off the back of this weekend's showing.

On that defence note, only West Ham could START a season with only one available central defender. Unbeliveable. Let's hope Aguerd and/or Dawson are back soon. Big ask for Johnson and he didn't do THAT badly considering the opposition.

Plus point, Scamacca looked very assured with what he was given to work with, so I'm excited to see him in a game where our attacking players can actually get the ball and try to create something.
